The Military Women’s Memorial Marks 25th Anniversary With Nationwide Call for Women to Register Their Military Service.
Washington, DC (November 1, 2022)— The Military Women’s Memorial (MWM), the nation’s only major memorial honoring all women’s military service, today announced a nationwide Veterans Day call for servicewomen to be remember and honored as part of its year-long 25th Anniversary celebration.
The Military Women’s Memorial Register currently hosts the records of service and memorable experiences of more than 304,000 servicewomen, ranging from celebrities such as chef Julia Child and actress Bea Arthur to current U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Joni Ernst, to historical figures including Harriet Tubman.
While the number of women registered with the Memorial is significant, it only represents about 10 percent of some 3 million women who have served, beginning with the American Revolution. Thus, to mark this milestone 25th anniversary year, the Military Women’s Memorial set a goal to bring the total registered to 310,000 by the end of 2022.
“The Register is the very heartbeat of the Military Women’s Memorial, and our history will never be complete until every military woman’s story is told,” said Phyllis Wilson, MWM president and retired Army CW5. “It is always inspiring to see our visitors, especially younger family members, learn about their mother’s, sister’s, or grandmother’s service and what it meant for this country. In celebration of our 25th Anniversary year, I encourage every servicewoman to take her rightful and visible place in history for all time by registering her service with the Memorial. Those who know a servicewoman can help make that happen, too.”
The Military Women’s Memorial is located at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery and visitors can access the Register on-site, which provides detailed information on each servicewoman’s military career, memorable experiences, and honors or awards and decorations as well as her picture.
Servicewomen, as well as family members and friends of servicewomen, can also visit the Military Women’s Memorial website at https://womensmemorial.org/make-herstory/ to register.
The 25th Anniversary Celebration for the Military Women’s Memorial featured a weekend of events in October headlined by an anniversary program with remarks from Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis R. McDonough. That event can be viewed in full here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBLpWsNa2K0.
Servicewomen, past and present, and members of the public are also invited to join the Military Women’s Memorial at 3:00 p.m., November 11, 2022, for its 25th annual Veterans Day program. The event will feature formal military honors, wreath-layings, a keynote address and remarks by currently serving and former servicewomen, past and present.
