Women Veterans Recognition Day

by | Apr 30, 2023

May 2, 2023 – While not a separate Veterans Day for women nor a national day of recognition, several states have passed legislation or proclamations making it an official state-recognized commemoration of women’s military service. The date was first recognized when the New York State Assembly declared June 12, 2008, to be Women Veterans’ Recognition Day. Some effort has been made to pass legislation making it a national day of recognition, but the resolution did not make it out of committee. You can inquire about the process to recognize June 12 as Women Veterans Recognition Day in your state by contacting your local State Department of Veterans Affairs or the Governor’s office. States and territories currently recognizing the date are Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Virgin Islands, and Wisconsin.
