Thank you for celebrating 27 years of the Military Women’s Memorial, America’s only major national memorial to honor and tell the story of the more than 3 million women who have served this nation, beginning with the American Revolution.
The Memorial’s October 18, 1997, dedication was an historic event. At the time, it was said this building was the most important landmark for American women in the 20th century. It was the first time the contributions of American women had been made visible. It was the first time, the nation had recognized and acknowledged our women citizens’ patriotism and valor. And, on that date, our nation’s capital at last had a major monument to its women. Imagine the excitement, the anticipation. There were some 40,000 military women, past and present, and their families and friends filling the street from the front of the Memorial almost to the traffic circle! It was the largest gathering ever of servicewomen–women whose service spanned from WWI to the present.
“I’m moved. I’m proud. I’m home,” said one of them.
PATRIOT LEADERSHIP AWARD
