SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Six Triple Eight: No Mail\, Low Morale
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online viewing of the documentary “The Six Triple Eight: No Mail\, Low Morale” followed by a quick message from MWM President Phyllis Wilson. \n\nRESERVE YOUR FREE TICKET TODAY!\n\nAbout the film: In February 1945\, the U.S. Army sent 855 black women from the Women’s Army Corps (WACs) to England and France to clear the backlog of mail in the European Theater of Operations.  The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion\, known as the SixTripleEight\, was the only all-black female battalion to serve in Europe during WWII.  Confronted with racism and sexism from their own leadership and troops\, they served with honor and distinction completing their mission in six months.  By war’s end\, the SixTripleEight had cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail ensuring the troops stayed in touch with their loved ones back home.  The last of the women returned home in March 1946.   They were never fully recognized…until now.

Rockwell seems to take special care to create images defining not only the American identity\, but more specifically the experience of women in America. His career\, from his first Saturday Evening Post cover in 1916 and going well into the 1970s\, overlapped with almost constant progression in women’s rights. From the decision of Congress to endorse the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920\, a great success for the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)\, to the flight of Amelia Earhart in 1932\, and the shifting roles of women during World War II era of the 1940s. \nUpon conclusion of these exclusive Evenings with Rockwell\, the Women In the Armed Forces maquette drawing will be loaned to the Cathedral of the Pines\, the nationally renowned memorial in southern New Hampshire. Among its many monuments is the Women’s Memorial Bell Tower\, which is believed to be the first monument in the United States devoted specifically to the service and sacrifice of women. Four large bronze bas-relief plaques\, designed by Norman Rockwell and cast by his son Peter\, decorate the tower’s four archways. One of the bas-relief plaques is called Women in the Armed Forces and represents the women of the United States Army\, Navy\, Air Force\, Marine Corps\, and Coast Guard. \n\nGroup Reservation Policy\nGroups may book the entire venue for the evening for a total of 125 guests per event. SUMMARY:Women Veteran appreSHEation Day
DESCRIPTION:The Military Women’s Memorial in partnership with OptumServe Federal Health Service cordially invite you to a special program commemorating the 73rd Anniversary of the Women’s Armed Service Integration Act on June 12th at 10am at the Military Women’s Memorial. \nThe program will include remarks by Military Women’s Memorial President CW5 Phyllis J. Wilson\, USA Ret.; OptumServe CEO and 43rd United States Army Surgeon General LTG Patricia D. Horoho\, USA Ret.; Acting Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Support with the Veterans Health Administration at the Department of Veterans Affairs Ms. Deborah E. Kramer; and The Honorable Julia Brownley\, United States House of Representatives. \n\nRESERVE YOUR TICKET NOW \n\nSigned into law June 12\, 1948\, the Women’s Armed Service Integration Act\, PL 625\, created a sea of change for America’s military and the women who chose to serve. This landmark legislation established a permanent\, albeit limited\, place for women in the nation’s military services. Its provisions would impact the way women would serve for the next seven decades. \nRecognizing the importance of the law and servicewomen’s extraordinary contributions\, eleven states have designated June 12 Women Veterans Day. Along with this service\, however\, comes the nation’s obligation to the health and well-being of military women\, past and present. Addressing servicewomen’s health and that of all servicemembers is a matter of national trust as well as national defense and readiness. \nThis 73rd Anniversary event brings together and will showcase the remarkable contributions during peace and war of women who accepted the challenge to serve; the obligations of a grateful nation for their health and well-being; and the collective work of the government\, military\, veteran service organizations and the private sector to meet those obligations. \nIn commemoration of this anniversary\, a special brooch has been designed by Ann Hand to be worn exclusively by women veterans of all eras and will be unveiled for the first time at the Military Women’s Memorial. \nThis program is part of a larger “Summer With The Arts: Healing\, Freedom\, Family” campaign that includes powerful and compelling exhibits by women veteran artists\, storytelling\, poetry\, and comedy workshops\, and virtual programs focused around the whole-person and integrated wellness. \nTickets are free. Face masks are required to enter Arlington National Cemetery and the Memorial. All visitors are required to go through Arlington National Cemetery’s security check-point before visiting the Memorial. Visitors ages 16 years and older are required to provide valid photo I.D. at the Cemetery’s security check-point. Parking is available at Arlington National Cemetery parking garage (credit card only). The Memorial is located two city blocks from the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail Station off the Blue Line. \nAbout Summer With The Arts \nThe Military Women’s Memorial in collaboration with UnitingUS\, Community Building Art Works and Armed Services Arts Partnership\, offers summer-long creative programming for the military-affiliated community. Cost $5\,000 for total event.
