"Her"story for the Generations
The Women's Memorial's Education Outreach Program has a mission to "let the generations know that women in uniform also guaranteed their freedom." Our approach to that mission is multifaceted.
The Memorial's Just 4 Kids programs annually bring hundreds of young people to the Memorial to learn about American history, patriotism and women's rich heritage of service. To help make the Memorial come alive for visiting students. Tours of the Memorial are also available.
For use in their classrooms or prior to and during a visit to the Memorial, educators are offered a comprehensive Education Kit containing materials and activities about the women who have served in our nation's defense. We hope to have this kit available online soon.
Every March, the Memorial Foundation produces a Women's History Month Poster that focuses on National Women's History Month and distributes it to military installations and Department of Defense schools worldwide, veterans' centers, and to hundreds of elementary, middle, and junior and senior high school libraries. The poster is part of an annual online, downloadable educational kit. The 2009 poster and kit, America's Military Women–Taking the Lead, features images of servicewomen taking the lead, as thousands of military women do everyday for the nation, their service and their fellow servicemembers. The poster highlights but a few of the important jobs military women do and suggests the many hundreds more regularly accomplished by today’s servicewomen. This exciting poster stimulates pride in America’s military women and encourages discussion about women’s roles throughout our history, as women moved from their homes, to the workplace and into increasing numbers of leadership roles.
The Women's Memorial also offers a variety of other resources about America's servicewomen via this site. In addition to a bibliography compiled by the Memorial's curatorial staff, the Web site has historical articles, which include a timeline and theme articles for Black History and Asian-Pacific Heritage Months, current statistics on America's servicewomen and our Gift Shop offers the world's largest collection of books by and about America's military women.
Of course, we are always looking for new ways to tell "her"story to the generations, so visit often to stay up-to-date on what's new in Education Outreach.
